Dental financing in Mexico: insurance, PPO, HSA and FSA options
Dental financing in Mexico means you do not always have to pay for treatment all at once. Depending on the provider, you may be able to use financing, staged payments, out-of-network insurance reimbursement or an eligible HSA or FSA.
Your options at a glance
Financing through U.S. lenders
Some providers in Tijuana work with U.S. financing companies. Approval, interest rates, repayment terms and credit requirements vary by lender, so compare the total you will repay, not only the monthly payment.
Getting reimbursed by a PPO plan
Patients with PPO dental insurance may be able to request out-of-network reimbursement after treatment, depending on their individual plan. These steps improve your chances:
- 1Call your insurer before you travel and ask whether out-of-network care abroad is covered, and at what percentage.
- 2Ask the clinic for an itemized invoice in English with procedure codes, tooth numbers and dates.
- 3Keep X-rays and your treatment plan; insurers often request them for major work.
- 4Submit the claim form with your invoice and proof of payment, and keep copies.
Using an HSA or FSA
Some patients use eligible health spending accounts for dental care abroad. International card acceptance can vary, so you may need to pay another way and reimburse yourself from the account. Keep itemized receipts for every payment.
Payment timing and staged treatment
Before committing, ask when payments are due, whether a deposit is required and whether treatment can be divided into stages. Implant and full-arch treatment often happens over two trips, which can split the cost naturally.
Dental financing in Mexico: common questions
Does insurance cover dental work in Mexico?
Sometimes. Many U.S. PPO dental plans reimburse care from out-of-network dentists, including dentists abroad, at their out-of-network rate. HMO and DHMO plans usually cover only in-network dentists, so treatment in Mexico is rarely covered. Call your insurer before you travel and ask, in writing, whether care outside the U.S. is reimbursed and at what percentage.
Does Medicare cover dental work in Mexico?
Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental care, and it rarely covers care received outside the United States. Some Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits; whether they reimburse treatment abroad depends on the plan.
What documents do I need to file a claim?
An itemized invoice in English with procedure codes, tooth numbers and dates, the dentist’s name and license number, proof of payment, and the X-rays or treatment plan your insurer requests. Ask the clinic for these before you leave Tijuana.
Can Canadian patients be reimbursed?
Some Canadian employer and private dental plans reimburse treatment done outside Canada. Coverage and limits vary, so confirm with your plan and keep every itemized receipt.
Is financing better than a credit card?
Compare the total you will repay, not the monthly payment. Promotional 0% plans can charge interest back to the purchase date if the balance is not paid in time, while a card with a lower rate may cost less over a longer period.
Can I pay in U.S. dollars?
Many Tijuana clinics that treat U.S. patients accept U.S. dollars and major cards. Ask about card fees and accepted payment methods before you travel.

Ask about payment options
Smile 4 Ever Mexico, our own clinic in Zona Río, offers monthly payments through MyGlobby for qualified patients, pay-per-phase treatment, and the documents you need to file a PPO claim. A $500 deposit, credited to treatment, reserves full-arch surgery dates.
